Frock Friday - Vintage Wedding Gowns - On Saturday...

Yikes! I didn't write my usual Frock Friday post. So sorry! Since I'm a day late, let's talk about Bridal Couture from yesteryear!

I love an off the rack wedding dress. There are plenty of varieties and a host of sizes to fit any bride. There are also a gamut of designers who specialize in only designing your dream dress -- Amsale, Vera WangIvy and AsterKenneth Pool and the list continues and continues. I love them, all of them. But you have other options too.

You can design your own dress and with a little initiative you can even have a professional, like Julie Ireland, help bring your design to life!

But have you ever considered a vintage gown? If you find a gown from a bygone era, lucky you. But there are sometimes some pitfalls you should be mindful of, for instance, look out for wear and stains. Fabric wears out in time and it may be hard to match contemporary fabrics. Sizing may be tricky as well. People were simply smaller in the past and a vintage gown may be difficult to size properly for the fragility of the textile especially.

But if you do choose a vintage gown and the fit is right and the sizing impeccable you are sure to shine in a one of a kind! And if you just can't seem to fit or your dream antique gown is over worn, sullied or impractical due to age, consider having a copy made.

There are a few places that specialize in the perfect vintage down for you but you should expect to pay for the highest quality. One such place is The Frock. I love to go there with frequency just to peruse the selection. A taste of what you might find:

Vintage Gown  has an entire page dedicated to "How You Buy a Vintage Gown!" And that page takes you to a secondary page devoted to several "Must Follow Rules!" Gulden and Brown have gone through great lengths to insure that you find the gown of your dreams and that more importantly you are over joyed about the investment you've made.

And finally, Vintage Vixen an easy to use, very well organized site, dedicated to all fashion vintage. Their selection is good and their prices are inexpensive.
